History

Quogue is one of the oldest European settlements on Long Island's East End. The name derives from the Shinnecock word "Quaquanantuck," meaning "the trembling place" — a reference to the marshy, shifting terrain between ocean and bay.

The village was formally incorporated in 1928, though its identity as a distinct community dates back centuries. Through the 19th and early 20th centuries, Quogue developed as a genteel summer retreat — less flashy than Southampton or East Hampton, more understated, more focused on nature and family.

That character endures today.

The Village Today

Approximately 1,000 people live in Quogue year-round, with the population growing to several thousand during the summer season. The village is governed by a Mayor and Board of Trustees who maintain the community's character through thoughtful zoning, environmental protection, and efficient governance.

There are no traffic lights in Quogue. No chain stores. No nightclubs. The loudest sounds you'll hear are the ocean waves and the birds at the Wildlife Refuge.

Natural Treasures

The 305-acre Quogue Wildlife Refuge, founded in 1934, is the village's crown jewel — a non-profit nature preserve with 7 miles of trails, an outdoor wildlife complex housing permanently injured raptors, the Fairy Dell Boardwalk over tidal wetlands, and one of the rarest ecosystems on Earth: the Dwarf Pine Barrens.

The village beach on Dune Road is consistently ranked among the cleanest and most beautiful on Long Island. Quantuck Creek and Shinnecock Bay provide world-class kayaking, fishing, and wildlife viewing.

Community

Quogue's institutions reflect its values. The volunteer fire department. The library with its beloved summer reading program. The Hampton Theatre Company staging plays since 1984. The Historical Society preserving stories from four centuries. Schmidt's Country Market as the daily gathering place. The annual State of the Village Address where the Mayor reports directly to residents.

Location

Quogue is 80 miles from Manhattan — approximately 90 minutes without traffic, 2 hours by LIRR to the Westhampton station. The village sits at the western gateway to the Hamptons, offering easier access and less traffic than communities further east, while delivering the same pristine beaches and natural beauty.
